What's the Difference Between Robes and Vestments?

In many Christian churches, clergy and choir members often wear special clothing during worship services. These unique garments help distinguish these church members so the congregation knows who is who. Vestments The liturgical vestments that are worn during worship ceremonies, like Mass, have evolved over time. In modern times to celebrate Mass, a priest wears: • Amice – A piece of rectangular white linen with two long cloth ribbons. It is worn around the neck to cover the clerical collar. It ties by crisscrossing the ribbons in front, then bringing them around the back, around the waist and tying them in a bow. • Alb - A long, white garment which flows from shoulders to ankles and has long sleeves extending to the wrists. The word alb means “white.” Some modern style albs have collars that replace the need for the amice. • Cincture - A long, thick cord with tassels at the ends which secures the alb around the waist. The cincture can be white or the same liturgical colour as the other vestments. • Stole - A long cloth, about four inches wide and of the same colour as the chasuble. It is worn around the neck like a scarf and is secured at the waist with the cincture. • Chasuble - The outer garment worn over the alb and stole. Over time, various styles of chasubles have emerged. These components are collectively known as vestments. The vestments are used at Mass and have a two-fold purpose. They should symbolize the function of each ministry and contributed to the beauty of the rite. In addition, the vestments inspire the priest and all of the faithful to meditate on their rich symbolism and tradition. Robes While vestments are worn by church leaders, robes are not. Originally, robes were designated for those with academic credentials. However, around the time of the Reformation, academic robes were worn in religious institutions and churches. To this day, clerical robes are typically worn in churches of the Reformed tradition, such as Presbyterians, Calvinists, and Baptists. Robes are not technically vestments because they are not typically worn by leaders. Instead, they are worn by others in the church, like choir members. Robes are typically ankle-length with long sleeves. Traditionally, there are four types of robes that evolved from academic regalia worn by university faculty in medieval colleges: • Choir gowns • Academic robes • Clergy robes • Judicial robes All four types of robes are intended to be worn over clothing. A stole can also be worn over the robe for an added pop of colour.
